The special trekking permits are required for most of the trekking area of Nepal besides Everest, Annapurna and Langtang regions. Specially trekking areas which is an open border or connected to other countries are called restricted trekking area by Nepal Government. Upper Mustang a hidden Buddhist kingdom of Nepal also connected to the China border. There are other restricted trekking area in Nepal such as TSUM VALLEY Trek, Manaslu circuit trekking, Narphu valley trekking, Upper Dolpo Trekking are also connected to border of other countries.
The Immigration of Kathmandu obtain the Upper Mustang special permit through Government register trekking company “Global Holidays Adventure Pvt.Ltd”. Besides there is not allowed individuals trekkers without a guide. Also single permits is not issued, at least 2 trekkers are required to obtain the permit. The Special trekking permit fees different for different destinations.

You need 2 permits to visit Upper Mustang.
Filming or documentary permits
If you are visiting Upper Mustang as purpose of filming or documentary then you need special trekking permit from Nepal ministry of Information and Communication and fees are depends on the use of camera and technologies.
Do I need TIMS card for Upper Mustang Trekking?
Trekking information management system is Nor Necessary to go upper Mustang Trekking. If you have issued restricted area trekking permits then you don’t need to obtain TIMS card for any other trekking areas of Nepal. But if you are extending your trip after Upper Mustang then you need TIMS for Ghorepani trekking, Annapurna Base Camp trekking, Everest base Camp trekking and others.
Where Can I get Upper Mustang Trekking Permit ?
All special trekking permits including Upper Mustang Trekking permit is issued by trekking department of Nepal Immigration office In Kalikayastan Kathmandu. Nepal Tourism board does not issue the Upper Mustang permit but other trekking Permits like ACAP, MCAP and National parks permits are issued.
