There are mainly 4 seasons in Nepal; spring (March to May), summer (June to mid-September), autumn (mid-September to November) and winter (December to February). The experts and professionals related to tourism in Nepal claims that the best season to visit Nepal is during spring and autumn because of the chill and clear weather. However, it is said that monsoon is not a good time to travel because of the rain and winter because of the snow and freezing cold.

Yes, it is hard to go trekking on high altitude where the weather is freezing cold and snowy. The tea houses and hotels situated at higher altitude are mostly closed during the winter season because of the excessive amount of snow and cold; but there are other various alternative activities and places in Nepal that are approachable and partake throughout the year. Different types of activities can be done according to different season. It just depends upon the interest and preference of a traveller to decide him/herself about his journey and the relative weather. You will get chance to see different version of Nepal in different season.

THINGS TO DO In WINTER (December – January – February )

Trekking at higher altitude or base camp is difficult during winter. The freezing cold with heavy snow fall hinders the hotel owner to open their hotels and provide service so most of them migrate to low altitudes closing their hotels and teahouses during winter. Long and high altitude trekking are mostly not recommended but the short treks around the Himalayas can be a very great option during winter to see the stunning and mesmerizing view of the Himalayas and snow-capped peaks and hills.

  1. Short trek around Kathmandu.
    Treks around Kathmandu valley can be a good thing to do as it offer a scenic views of the mountains peaks including Mt. Everest (highest peak of the world, 8,848 m) and Mt. Manasalu (8th highest peak of the world, 8,163 m). Treks like Dhulikhel-NamoBudhha-Panauti, Sundarijal-Chisapani-Nagarkot, etc. can be done shortly. These treks will offer you nice panoramic view of mountain ranges like Everest, Rolwaling, Langtang and Manasalu. The trek may last for 3-4 nights depending on your preference.

  2. Short trek around Pokhara.
    Trek around Ghorepani-Poonhill, Mardi Himal, Khopra Ridge, Mohare Ridge, etc. can be a fairytale destination with light snow fall on high altitudes and can offer you the best view and walking experience in the chilly weather. Ghalegau, Bhujung can be trekked shortly during winter. The duration of these short treks can be 5-6 days depending on your preferences. Alluring and appealing view of various mountains such as Mt. Everest, Mt. Annapurna, Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Gaurishankar, Mt. Fishtail and other peaks can be seen and enjoyed. Sunrise and sunset views from these places offers you a delightful feeling.   1. Hike Around Kathmandu Valley
    Hike around Chisapani, Nagarkot, Dhulikhel, Shivapuri-Nagarjuna, Godawari, Panauti, Chandragiri etc. can be a better option for nature lovers. They are less cold in comparison to other short trek destination but offers good sights of the mountains peak and nature. Peaks like Mt. Everest, Mt. Gaurishankar, Rolwaling Himal, Jugal Himal, Langtang Ri, Ganesh Himal and Mt. Manasalu can be seen from different parts of the valley during the hike.

    Regarding short hiking, places around Pokhara also offers a great scenes and panoramic views of mountains ranges. It is 200km/7 hours depending on the weather and a flight will take you to Pokhara in 25 minutes from Kathmandu. Places like Australian Base Camp, Dhampus, Rupakot, Sikles, can be hiked shortly from Pokhara which can offer you great views of Annapurna ranges, Mt. Fishtail, Mt. Manasalu, Lamjung Himal, etc. Pokhara is a beautiful valley on its own with the beautiful Lakes which surrounds the valley. Phewa Lake, Begnas Lake and Rupa Lake are the major Lakes of Pokhara. Nightlife around Pokhara is worth it to spend in some rock bars or hang around the lakeside.

If trekking and hiking are not your things or you don’t like walking, different other destinations that are approachable on wheels also provide you a satisfying experience. If you do not want to have a chilly holiday and just want to relax enjoying the sceneries then you can experience a short tour around the country.

    Kathmandu, Pokhara, Bandipur, Chitwan, Lumbini, Ilam, Bardia, etc. can be a good place to travel on wheels during winter. They have great historical, archaeological, natural as well as cultural importance and also offer you the most beautiful views of the Himalayas and the nature from low altitude. A drive to these places during winter can make your winter holiday a lifetime memory. Sightseeing and observation around the sites that are historically and archeologically rich will surprise you with the ancient handicrafts and architectures. There is less chance of snowfall in these places so they have mild and moderate temperature in comparison to other places.If you do not want to trek but want to enjoy the snowfall, then a short drive to Kalinchowk, Sailung, Muktinath, etc. can fulfill your desire of snowfall.     Around Pokhara, the evening is more delighted than the night in comparison to Kathmandu. Walk around lakeside can be a very great thing to do in Pokhara during the evening. The night life is also good and there are rock bar and pubs where local artist perform various genres of songs from classical, pop, rock, grunge to metal. Rolling stones and blues bar are some top rock bars of Pokhara. Trisara is one of the famous garden and restaurant both in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

During winter, the weather is cool and good. The mountain views are clearer and skies are blue. The temperature may vary from place to place depending upon their altitude.

The maximum temperature of Kathmandu (1,400 m), the capital city reaches up to 20° C and minimum up to 2° C with an average of 12° C. The mountain peaks of Everest ranges, Rolwaling ranges, Langtang ranges and Manasalu ranges which are well covered with snow with nice blue sky background; dazzling with the reflection of the sun rays, can be seen from different part of Kathmandu valley. The morning and evening are mostly chilly but the luring sunrise and sunset views can be enjoyed.

The maximum temperature of Pokhara (750 m), the lake city and major tourist destination of Nepal, reaches up to 20° C and minimum ranges up to 7.7° C with an average of 18° C. Annapurna ranges, Dhaulagiri ranges, Nilgiri, Manasalu are some mountain ranges that can be seen from the valley. The morning and evening are most chilly but are more worth to spend time because of the sunrise and sunset and the reflection of Mt. Fishtail in Phewa Lake. If you are planning to travel Nepal during winter then make sure you pack nice and warm clothes according to your selected destination. The morning and evening are chillier than the day. If you are trekking shortly then pack thick socks, warm hats and inners. Carry your camera and some power banks for emergencies.

It will cost according to the day you are spending; $25, $40 and $100 for 15, 30 and 90 days respectively. You can apply for Nepal’s visa in advance from online which will be easier and faster than apply on arrival.
