Details for Gokyo Lake Trek

The Everest Base Camp Gokyo Lake trek start from Kathmandu takes to Lukla by 45 minutes flight where your journey will start. The trail ahead to Gokyo Lake via Namche Bazar, the Tibetan trading hub. An early morning short trek to Gokyo Ri welcomes with thrilling views of several mountains, Gokyo lakes and tremendous ice ridge between Cho Oyu and Gyachung located in the Khumbu region. The trek moves forward to Everest base camp (5380m) passing through the adventurous Chola pass (5420m). From the base of the highest peak we reach Kalapatthar (5644m), located on the south ridge of Pumori (7161m) above Gorakshep. The Gokyo Lake to Everest Base Camp Trek provides enthralling close up view of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Changtse, Lhotse and others Himalayan snow-capped peaks.

After a night spend in Gorakshep, you will pick up by helicopter to Lukla where you can see the wide range views of almost every jewel of Everest region.

Day

Arrive at Kathmandu.
You will be welcomed by our staff and transferred to your hotel. Small meeting about the trip in the evening.

Day

Fly to Lukla and trek to Phakding (2652m).
Early morning transfer to airport for Lukla flight. The flight into Lukla is a lifetime experience in itself. The airfield is at high elevation and the runway is mere 60 meter long! Trek to Phakding walking along green landscapes & view of Kusum Kangraru.

Trek to Namche Bazaar (3440m), 5/6 hrs walk.
We follow the Dudh Kosi, ascending through Himalayan pine and Doedar cedar forests, to the celebrated village of Namche Bazaar. The village of Namche is a historic trading post where Nepalese and Tibetan traders exchange salt, dried meat and textiles. Besides being a superb place to shop for traditional crafts, Namche remains the central trading post in the Khumbu, attracting Himalayan and lowland merchants. You will spend two days in Namche for acclimatization, visit local markets and spend time with your team. On the hike we capture our first glimpses of Everest and neighboring peaks.

Day

Acclimatization Day in Namche.
This day is reserved for acclimatization and a very slow ascend into the thin air. After breakfast you will start to ascend towards Khumjung. The trail ascends above Namche Bazar and passes through Syangboche (3720m) – this is where the the world highest airport is located. From a hill top above the airport, you will get your first view of Tangboche Peak (6367m), Lhotse Peak (8414m) and Ama Dablam (6856m). On arrival at Khumjung (3780m), you could visit the Hillary School before stopping for lunch at one of the tea houses - the walk takes about 3 hours. After lunch you will continue ascending the foot path to Khunde (3840m), here you could visit the local hospital before the 2 hour ascend back to Namche Bazar. This day is physically demanding at times and you should be prepared as the weather is very unpredictable. Namche Bazaar is known as the gateway of the Everest Region, visit the local museum where you can see the traditional custom of the Sherpa peoples. You will spend a second night in Namche.

Day

Trek to Phorste Thanga (3680 meters) 5/6 hrs walk.
Today, the trail ascends steeply out of valley through rhododendron forest, juniper and large conifers start to appear as the elevation increases making the trekking beautiful in spring. The trail passes through Yak pastures and summer settlements. The views of Khumbi La and Tawache are magnificent throughout the day.

Day

Trek to Machherma (4470 meters). 5/6 hrs walk.
The trail climbs a ridge for an excellent view both down the valley to Kengtega and up towards Cho Oyu and descend to a river and again climbs steep to the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpz glacier. We will reach at Machherma by early noon.

Trek to Gokyo Lake (4790 meters) 6/7 hrs walk.
Today the trek takes us to one of our final destinations, Gokyo (4790m). We will make this camp our base for 2 nights as we will have couple of sightseeing and hiking trips around Gokyo.

Day

Hike to Gokyo Ri (5357m) and trek to Taknak ( 4700m) 5/6 hrs walk.
Today, early in the morning we have steep climb up to the top of Gokyo Ri at an elevation of 5483 meters, with a lot of rewards at top. There are stunning views of the supper Gokyo valley, the massive Ngozumpa Glacier and an incredible panoramic view of the whole Khumbu Himalayas, such as giants as Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Cho-Oyu and Gychung Kang. Then after you will trek to Taknak. At this point we make our final preparation to pass Cho La.

Day

Cross Chola Pass (5368m)and trek to Dzongla(4830m)- Trek to Dhukla ( 4600m) 6/7 hours.
We cross over at an altitude of 5300 meters, we could be exposed to strong winds if we are too late. We start to climb steep tracks that is regularly used and easy to follow. However, the problem may arise due to the altitude and snow. It often causes terrible problems to cross the pass if it is covered by snow. As you reach the top, you are rewarded by the magnificent views, then we descend to Thukla at noon.

Day

Trek lobuche to Gorakshep to Everest Base camp (5364m)- back to Gorakshep 6/7 hours walk.
This is a big and difficult day walk along the Khumbu Glacier and up to Everest Base Camp at 5365 meters. the closest you can get to Mt. Everest without mountaineering equipment. There will likely be a team about to attempt the summit. The view of the Khumbu Icefall from Base Camp is spectacular. We return back to Gorak shep for the night.

Day

An early morning hike to Kalapattar (5545m) and return to Gorakshep, 3/4 hrs walk. And fly to Lukla by Helicopter.
The day starts an early morning with a hike up to Kalapattar (5545m), the best view point to witness Mt. Everest and the spectacular Himalayan range. Then trek back to Gorekshep for hot breakfast. From there you will take a helicopter flight to reach directly to Lukla. This is the opportunity to view various jewels of Everest region from a bird’s eye view. Explore each and every mountains, glaciers and Lakes and the memorable trail you have just walked through, all from the blue sky. The night is spent at Lukla.

Required Equipments

Equipment items are individual interests & choices but the most important fact is that you should carry enough clothes to tackle the cold weather in the Himalayas. During the trek heavy items will be carried by our porters or yaks. And the personal belongings which you need for daily or frequent purposes like money, water bottle, rain gear, camera, sun-cream and toilet paper etc. are to be carried by yourself in the backpack. We will provide complimentary water proof duffel bag which you can use during the trek and is carried by porters. You can leave your non trekking items at the hotel or in our office and collect them after the trek.

The following list gives you a general idea of the personal items that you can bring for the trek.

GENERAL

  • 4 seasons sleeping bag (Optional/ we can provide if you need it but is to be returned after the trek)
  • Duffel or Rucksack or suitcase ( We will provide one complimentary GHD duffel bag gore you to Keep )
  • Daypack
  • Down Jacket ( Optional/we can provide if you need one but is to be returned after the trek. )


UPPER BODY-HEAD /EARS /EYES

  • Shade hat or baseball cap-some people drape a bandana down the back of their head and then put a baseball cap on to hold it in place. 
  • Warm wool and synthetic hat that cover your ears.
  • Balaclava-lightweight, thinner variety.
  • Glacier glasses- 100% UV protection with side shields and a hard-sided storage case ( i.e Jumbo or Cube).
  • Headlamp- Black Diamond and Petzl both make several good ones. Make sure to bring extra batteries and that they will last in the colder temperatures.
  • Some people like ear-muffs; There are optional; a good hat balaclava, and hooded jacket should really be sufficient, but this is a personal choice for some people ( Optional).
  • A Neck Warmer is another piece of gear for extra warmth if you feel you will need it ( Optional).

HAND

  • 1 pair liner gloves, thins wool or synthetic, useful alone on mind days or as a layer inside other gloves/mitts for additional warmth.
  • 1 pair shell gloves or mitts; Gore-Tex is preferred for keeping hands dry.
  • 1 pair warm gloves ( heavier fleece or wool )
  • Instant hand warmers are always nice in a pinch, but really shouldn't be necessary on the trek. Bringing appropriate hand protection as recommended above, should be sufficient( Optional).

CORE BODY

  • T-SHIRTS -2
  • Light and expedition weight thermal tops.
  • Fleece jacket or pullover.
  • Fleece Wind-Stopper Jacket ( Optional)
  • Waterproof ( preferably breathable fabric) shell jacket.
  • 2 women sports bras, synthetic, no cotton.

LOWER BODY-LEGS

  • 2 pairs nylon hiking shorts-quick drying type not cotton.
  • Underwear, stay away from cotton ( 4).
  • 2 pairs lightweight long underwear-capilene or ther synthetic.
  • 1 pair soft shell pants-synthetic, full zip from top and bottom preferable.
  • 2 pairs trekking pants, preferably that zip on/off at the knees so they double as shorts.
  • 1 pair hard shell pants. Waterproof/breathable, Gore-Tex or equivalent is best. Should zip from top and bottom- this makes it easier to put on over boots without getting undressed should the weather change once you are underway for the day.
  • 1 pair cotton pants ( loose jeans/khakis ).
  • All clothing should be kept dry using waterproof stuff sacks or large puncture resident plastic bags.

FEET

  • 4 pairs of liner socks, synthetic or capilene.
  • 3 pairs heavy weight socks to be worn over liner socks.
  • 1 pairs light weight socks, a good option for the lower/warmer parts of the trail.
  • 1 pair light to medium weight water proof hiking/trekking boots.
  • 1 pair light trekking shoes or sneakers. Good for around the camp/lodges and in Kathmandu.
  • 1 pair hiking gaiters, good for keeping dust and rocks out of your shoes/boots as well as keep your feet dry as necessary ( Optional).
  • 1 pair sandals (Optional).

MEDICINES AND FIRST AID KITS
(Please note our guide will also carry the first aid kit bag during the trek. However we still recommend you to bring your personal first aid kit as well.)

  • Extra Strength Excedrin for altitude related headaches.
  • Ibuprofen for general aches and pains.
  • Immodium or Pepto bismol capsules for upset stomach or diarrhea.
  • Diamox ( Commonly prescribed as acetazolamide) 125 or 250 mg tablets for altitude sickness. Please discuss with us before starting to take his medicine.
  • Water purification iodine tablets or polar-pure crystals.

MISCELLANEOUS, BUT IMPORTANT !

  • Passport and extra passport photos (4 copies )
  • Airline ticket ( Please make a copy and leave on at our office in Kathmandu just in case if you need to change the date of you)
  • Durable wallet/pouch for travel documents, money & Passport.
  • Sunscreen. SPF 40 is recommended and should be relatively new since it loses its effectiveness over time.
  • Pocket knife or small Swiss army type.
  • Toiletry kit, Be sure to include toilet paper stored in a plastic bag, hand wipes, and liquid hand sanitizer, towels, soap, etc.

OPTIONAL

  • 1 pair adjustable trekking pole. 
  • Favorite snack foods, no more than 2 pounds ( Optional).
  • Paperback books, cards, mp3 player.
  • Binocular (optional)
  • 1 light weight point & shoot camera or 1 large SLR. Digital cameras are ok, but you must keep the batteries warm when not in use ( Optional)
