Altitude sickness often known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a condition that occours when you ascend to high elevation too quickly from lower elevation. This happens because your body does not get enough time to adapt with the oxygen level at higher altitude. This is why acclimatization is necessary before moving from lover elevation to higher elevation.
What happens is, at high altitude is the air pressure is low which result in low level of oxygen in the surrounding. This generally reflect in your body as your body struggles to get enough oxygen to function normally.
AMS usually gets triggered after reaching in altitude of 2500m (8200 ft.) and it vary according to person. Some gets triggered instantly where as some people take 3-6 hour after reaching in altitude.
