Overview

Lower Dolpo Trek is preferred as the hidden jewel trekking in the western part of Nepal. This trek preserves a unique Trans-Himalayan ecosystem with a diversity of flora and fauna. Only a very few number of trekkers know about this destination. It lies in the rain shadow area of the great Himalayas. A good walk around this region will give trekkers a diversified experience. One will surely get charmed by the natural, cultural as well as spiritual diversity of this region. The main attraction of this trek is the deepest lake of Nepal, Shey Phoksundo Lake.

Lower Dolpo Trek approaches with a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then another flight to Juphal. From Juphal, trekkers need to trek for 6-7 hours per day. Our trek teams will be carrying all the camping goods and stuffs required. Each day, you will have different experience walking from the colorful fields of Wheat, Barley and millet, passing various beautiful settlements to the barren landscape of the Tibetan plateaus. Trekkers will cross two high passes; Numa LA pass and Baga LA pass. Incredible view of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Kanjirowa with Tibet peaks Kugung LA and Khyung LA can be admired from both passes. Our final destination will be Shey Phoksundo. You will get astonished by the pristine turquoise water of the Shey Phoksundo Lake. One can have the best part of their life spending an overnight around the Lake and waking up with the best sunrise around the lake.

Most of the lower Dolpo trek falls under the Shey Phoksundo National Park. Shey Phoksundo Lake lies in this region which is designated as a Ramsar site in 2008 due to its international importance. Most probably, people recognize this Lake from the movie “CARAVAN” first Nepalese film to be nominated in the Best Foreign film category. The movie narrates the difficulty of the human lifestyle around the Himalayas of the Dolpo Region.

Talking about the local people and their culture, the people around this region mainly follow Buddhist religion and ancient Buddhist religion known as “Bon Po”. They have their own unique culture which was preserved since centuries. Due to its location in the border of Tibet, these ancient culture and tradition has been followed and preserved by the local since centuries. The ancient cross culture of lower Dolpo will surprise you.

As lower Dolpo trek lies under the Shey Phoksundo National Park, trekkers have to pass various dense forests of rhododendrons and pine trees. If you are lucky, you may trace Himalayan blue sheep. Snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan Tahr, langur; other varies species of wildlife, birds and vegetation during the trek.

The trekking trails are ancient salt trade routes to Tibet. Still, we can encounter yak caravans. Generally, they are used as means of transport to carry loads and stuffs for trading purposes.

Lower Dolpo trek requires a special permit. Trekkers have to pay both special permit as well as National Park entry permit before approaching to this region. There are ticket check-posts along the trails for the entry and exit records.

We, Global Holidays Adventure Pvt. Ltd, design both readymade as well as tailor-made itineraries for this Lower Dolpo Trek. For more exploration and adventure, one can trek around the Upper Dolpo.
